The General Driving Public

Astute drivers know it is important to keep their injectors clean, but not necessarily how best to clean them. As injectors develop gradual problems over the normal course of driving, the change in engine performance, drivability and fuel mileage is subtle. Once these problems reach an excessive level and the injector flow or spray pattern function drops below 80% of original operation, the driver will notice some kind of severe drivability problem or the check engine light will come on.

To address this, many shops utilize a method of chemically cleaning injectors. Although this method is quick and inexpensive, there are downsides to this approach. Chemically cleaning injectors on the car is complete guess work. There is simply no way of accurately calculating the before and after improvement of each injector. One can only assume that because the cleaning was performed, all the injectors are good and responded equally. In addition, during a chemical cleaning process, harsh chemicals are introduced to the fuel system. These chemicals can attack rubber and plastics in the fuel system. Also, the engine cylinder walls/rings and exhaust catalytic converters suffer damaging long term side affects. Of course, there is also the issue of excessive air pollution during and for a short time after the cleaning process (sometimes up to 30 minutes).

At Bavarian Machine Specialties we take a different approach to cleaning injectors. We utilize a New Age injector flow bench

allowing a precise method of ultra-sonically cleaning, back flushing, flow and pattern testing each injector to provide a balanced fuel delivery output.

The injectors must be removed from the car to provide this level of testing and cleaning. Every injector receives the following step by step procedure.

  • Test and obtain a base line of each used injector including spray patterns, flow rate and pintle leakage to determine if cleaning is necessary
  • Measure injector windings to determine correct internal resistance under load
  • Disassemble injectors (i.e. hoses, pintle caps, seals and screens)
  • Ultra-sonic cleaning including pulsed injector operation during cleaning process
  • Back flush procedure to remove internal contaminants
  • Spray pattern and flow rate testing to obtain balanced results
  • Leak down testing to ensure pintle sealing
  • Final injector cleaning and refinishing with epoxy coating
  • Final assembly (new hoses, caps, seals, and screens as needed)

The price for most conventional injector servicing is $29.95 each plus parts (typically $4 to $5 per injector).
Removal of injectors from the car is additional labor.
Turn around time is usually 24 hours.
